Drop It Like a Squat? My Barbell Confession from a Smith Machine

Hello Reader,
βœ‰οΈ Monday Momentum #24

Heya Fit Travel Tribe,
On today's Monday Momentum, I'm tackling a budget gym dilemma you've definitely faced abroad or at home: the great Smith Machine vs. Barbell debate.

πŸ€” Smith Machine vs. Barbell: Which Should You Use? πŸ€”

First off....what's the difference? Maybe it doesn't ring a bell...

πŸ‘‰Smith machine - Unhook the bar and it moves in a fixed, vertical position
πŸ‘‰
Barbell - Bar is lifted up independently from the rack

Personally, I used to get so frustrated when a gym only had a Smith machine for squats. With my tighter ankles, the fixed bar path felt awkward and, frankly, a bit sketchy.

As much as I *roll my eyes* at seeing a sole Smith machine in a foreign gym, it DOES have its benefits.

So, how do you pick which is best for YOU?

And even if you prefer the barbell...what if the Smith is your only option?

So today I'm giving you:

βœ… The quick pros & cons of each
βœ…
When stuck with the Smith, how to adapt
βœ…
How to earn free flights (because...always!)

🌟Notes from the Fit Travel Trail

πŸ‘‹ Hello from a travel-weary but content-creating soul.

I'm back in my home base of Sofia, Bulgaria, and it feels so good to unpack for more than three days.

Anyone else feel like they're dancing through the lightning strikes right now? βš‘πŸ˜πŸ’ƒ

Confession time πŸ‘‡

I'm super tired of travel. It's hitting my motivation and is a bit depressing, yet I always hear "Oh wow, you're living the life!"

Yes, but... I dream of not traveling for many months, getting my visa sorted, and just staying put. In the meantime, I'm channeling it all into creating new audio walking tours!

Here are some quick highlights since last time:

  • 🎬 Finalized my Chicago audio tour! So excited for you to hear it. Check out the preview HERE!
  • πŸ›οΈ First full day back in Sofia involved teaching a fitness class and then immediately... giving my passport away to the embassy for renewal! Reason being...
  • πŸ“– I'm running out of pages! My passport doesn't expire until 2029, but I only have 2 pages left. You bet I checked the box for the 52-page "frequent traveler" book.
  • πŸ›‘ Grounded from traveling for a few weeks to get the new passport, just in time for a big fitness event this month!
  • 🐈 Pet SO many cats in Istanbul. I needed that cat therapy. There was one in particular... oof, I wish I could have adopted.

@Voicemap gave a shoutout for my Pilsen street art Chicago tour on Insta which was very exciting!

Glad to took the time to slow down to enjoy a proper Turkish coffee and this view in Izmir

Not sure if she was ever held before, but then by the third time she crawled around my neck and didn't want to let go (when I was heading to the airport yesterday)

Also, literally Life of a Showgirl music ALL THE TIME right now!

My Guide to Budget Gyms in TΓΌrkiye πŸ‹πŸ’Έ

Finding a decent, affordable gym on the road is a game-changer. I've been testing them out for you and just published my deep-dives on gyms in two amazing spots (and my third coming soon will be for Istanbul):

Inside these posts:

  • πŸ‘‰SelΓ§uk: The best gym near the Ephesus ruins, with price and equipment breakdown.
  • πŸ‘‰GΓΆreme: Where to lift in Cappadocia so you can earn those sunset views.
  • Real photos and my experience so you know exactly what to expect.
  • No fluff, just the facts to plan your workout.

πŸ‘‰ Bookmark these spots if you ever plan to visit the country of TΓΌrkiye!

Though my motivation is waning for lifting while traveling, it's felt good to double-dip and capture some content too!

πŸ“ The Budget Gym --- where your gains meet travel constraints πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ

Walk into a budget gym abroad and you'll often find a Smith Machine but no full squat rack. It's a classic nomad dilemma.

So, let's get to the big questions:

⬇ ⬇ ⬇

1. Which option is best for your squats?

The verdict?

For building raw, functional strength and power, the Barbell is the undisputed champion.

2. But what if you're stuck with a Smith Machine?

Key Tips:

β€’ βœ…Control the descent (3-4 seconds)
β€’ βœ…Focus on muscle mind-connection
β€’ ❌Don't chase heavy weight - focus on form
β€’ βœ…Perfect for higher rep ranges (10-15)

In short, don't despair! Just take time to adapt and conquer your workout!

This isn't magicβ€”it's a system. And I've packed everything I've learned into one simple guide.

The 3-step mindset for travel hacking:

  1. Pick the right card for your spending (travel cards are best for me!) 😍
  2. Put your everyday spending on it (groceries, bills, etc.) πŸ€‘
  3. Pay it off EVERY month (this is non-negotiable) πŸ€“

Once you get the hang of it, you're basically getting paid to travel.

Always on my mind: More money for more travel! It's often worth a little homework for those savings πŸ’Έ
