My #1 bucket list adventure (+ 6 others around the globe)

Hello Reader,
βœ‰οΈ Monday Momentum #26

Heya Fit Travel Tribe,
On today's Monday Momentum, I'm sharing 7 jaw-dropping destinations that'll test your limits (and why the challenge makes them unforgettable).

πŸ”οΈ What if your next trip wasn't just about Instagram pics? πŸ”οΈ

I was standing at the summit of a volcano in Guatemala, bundled up at sunrise, viewing an active volcano eruption, when I asked myself:

"When am I ever going to see something like this again?"

(Reminds me of my favorite quote: The steeper the mountain, the harder the climb. The better the view from the finish line.)

Those breakthrough moments? They don't happen on poolside lounge chairs.

They happen when you push yourself somewhere epic.

So today I'm giving you:

βœ… 7 world-class active adventures (covered in my podcast feature below)

βœ… Spontaneous travel intel from Macedonia (see trail notes)

βœ… A deeper dive on my #1 ranked epic, active adventure (featured section)

πŸ“ And my go-to hack for $0 housing in any city (thrifty quest)

Let's goπŸ‘‡

🌟Notes from the Fit Travel Trail

Zdravo! πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰ (ZDRAH-voh)

πŸ‘‹ Hello from Skopje, Macedonia!

Spontaneous Trip?? YEPPPP!

Friday = Decided to leave Bulgaria for a week (see below)

Saturday =
Picked my destination (nearby & cheap)

Sunday evening =
Hopped on a 5-hour bus (ta-da!)

Here are some quick highlights since last time:

  • β˜• Hosted a friend in Sofia!!! My travel friend, Caitlin, took a spontaneous trip to visit Sofia and she stayed with us for a week. It was the first time someone came to visit me which was overly exciting.
  • πŸ“ October = paperwork overload (life updates, big moves, processes galore... more exciting news once I cross some major milestones!)
  • πŸ“… Running low on Schengen days so I'm NOT here for tourismβ€”just working remotely and managing visa logistics
  • πŸ• Crashed with a Couchsurfing host who has a spacious kitchen, great workspace, and the cutest small dog
  • ✈️ Back to Bulgaria Monday for more paperwork, then BOOKING my last-minute flight to DC (expensive? not really - see below for how I use credit card points!)
  • πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Heading stateside to redo my criminal background check IN PERSON (expedited this timeβ€”visa, here I come! It's long overdue)
  • πŸ‘‹ Excited to see family & friends while I'm back in the States
  • πŸŽ„ Saving Schengen days for Christmas travel (the planning never stops!)

Lots more travel coming up these next three months (location and timing is super TBD).

Thankfully, I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel to FINALLY settle down in Sofia!

Caitlin and I met in our Indie Life Collective community (formerly known as Location Indie). It's all about designing life on your terms: travel when you want, work how you want, money to back it up.

We only met twice briefly and stayed in touch over the last 1.5 years). Great to spend more time together in person!

This is my forever favorite view of Sofia. The clouds looked gorgeous this day! And you can see the snowy Vitosha mountain peek in the distance.

πŸ“ 7 Epic Adventures That'll Change Your Life

I sat down with Jason Moore on the Zero To Travel Podcast to talk about the 7 most jaw-dropping active adventures I've experienced (or am dying to experience).

From volcano summits to ancient trails, these destinations demand effortβ€”but that's exactly what makes them unforgettable.

In this 1-hour episode, I cover:

  • How divorce and a couchsurfing connection sparked my global lifestyle
  • Why I traded structure for uncertainty (and never looked back)
  • My personal bucket list of physical feats around the world
  • How to blend movement with exploration without sacrificing either

πŸ‘‰ So what does this mean?

Adventure travel isn't just for ultra-athletes. It's for anyone willing to show up and try.

(Plus, I couldn't stick to just 7... so I added 3 "honorable mentions" because I'm an oversharer like that)

✈️πŸ’ͺWhere Travel & Fitness Converge

πŸ“ Acatenango Volcano, Guatemala β€” sunrise summit + volcanic eruptions

Watching the sunrise at the summit was one of the most memorable travel experiences AND one of the most rewarding physical feats of my life.

On the recent podcast episode where I created a list of 7 bucket list physical adventures around the world.
I did NOT rank them 1-7.

I DID however rank my #1.

This overnight volcano hike.

This hike is physically demanding, however, I think it can be very accessible and therefore can provide numerous people with once-in-a-lifetime views of an active volcano eruption.

As for the difficulty? It's that exact challenge in combination with the views that makes this so much more rewarding.

πŸ‘‰ So what does this mean?

You don't need to be an ultra-athlete, but you DO need to prepare. Altitude consideration, hiking conditioning, and the right mindset make all the difference.

Yes, it IS steep and physically demanding....However, the challenge is partially what makes it unforgettable.

Ready for your epic volcano eruption?

πŸ˜΄πŸ›Œ My Secret Weapon For FREE Housing?

Let's talk about the biggest travel expense: accommodation.

Housing isn't optional.

And when you're bouncing between cities (or managing visa logistics like me), those nightly costs add up FAST.

Solution? πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰ Couchsurfing

🏠 Why I chose Skopje over returning to Pirot: Big cities = tons of hosts. More options = better chance of finding the perfect setup (spacious kitchen, good workspace, friendly vibes).

🌍 It works everywhere: I've Couchsurfed in the Balkans, across Europe, even in Chicago. If there's a city, there are hosts.

I also love how spontaneous I can be. Booked a hotel and want to leave early and travel elsewhere? If you don't put money down....you have FREEDOM!

πŸ’° The math is simple:

  • Hotel/hostel: €20-50/night minimum
  • Couchsurfing: €0
  • Savings over one week: €140-350+

But here's the thing:

Free accommodation is amazing, but safety comes first.

I've learned what to look for (and what red flags to avoid) over 50+ stays with different hosts.

Always on my mind: More money for more travel! It's often worth a little homework for those savings πŸ’Έ

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
