“You owe $0.” The best words I’ve heard abroad

Hello Reader,
✉️ Monday Momentum #21

Heya Fit Travel Tribe,
For this Monday Momentum edition, let's dive into the travel reality nobody posts on Instagram...It's not "if" you get sick...but...

🤒WHEN you get sick🤒

If you travel often, at some point this WILL happen to you on the road. It's just inevitable!

The TWO biggest questions re: travel insurance

1. What does it cover?
2. Is it "worth it?"

👇 👇 👇

Here are my answers:

  1. Read my newest blog post below! I've got the deets!
  2. Ummm....YES!

If there is ever ANY advice you should take from me, purchase travel insurance! (That and, stretch more 🤣)

We use SafetyWing because it's low cost, flexible, and has saved me more than once! (Twice, actually, within just 2 months of traveling in Asia)

So today I'm giving you:

Why "I'm young and healthy" isn't a travel insurance strategy (there's always 'something' that can happen)
The exact coverage that saved me thousands (detailed in my featured section)
How to compare your insurance options (see my thrifty tips below)

Let's go👇

🌟Notes from the Fit Travel Trail

👋 Hello from Bulgaria… still! Though I’m bouncing around internally a bit this month...

Here are some notes from the trail lately:

  • 🎉 Celebrated a long birthday weekend with my sweetheart at Sunny Beach (yes, that’s really the city’s name!)
  • 🏔 Next weekend, I’ll be joining him in a mountain village where he’s renting his personal apartment in Coliving Semkovo
  • 💪 Battling some tough “rotator cuff syndrome” — sports med doc in Jersey gave me a cortisol shot two months ago, still on the mend
  • 🤕 Not surprised by the diagnosis — probably over-training and pushing my mobility a bit too far
  • 🩺 Still thinking about travel insurance, smart training, and rehab… and that looming “do I need another doctor visit?” question

Sometimes travel isn’t just about the sights — it’s about staying sane while managing your body and health on the move.

Birthday weekend at Sunny Beach on the Black Sea Coast! I love how the water is less salty than the Atlantic.

Figuring out a lifting routine that takes it easy on my injured shoulder. I'm craving heavy upper body lifts...

My favorite street cats! "My" cat is the orange and white one (he lets me pet him). And this is his friend we call "The Pal."

On the sea coast, we visited Nessebar Island. They have their annual celebration on August 15th (the day before my birthday).

I've never been much of a "beach" person, but this is my absolute favorite beach for relaxing.

Evening stroll in Sofia. This beautiful fountain and theater is very close to where we live in the city center.

🎉Featured Expedition

I'm the first to say "I'm cheap" about a lot of things.
And I used to not "splurge" on travel insurance even though I used all of my vacation days from my former full-time job.

Before my travel-insurance-spluring-days, there were definitely times emergencies popped up....and I just had to pay out of pocket. WOMP WOMP. But that's life!!!

The cost of coverage + peace of mind > risking paying out of pocket 💰

Now, I'm never traveling without it.

I personally use SafetyWing travel insurance. After tons of research, in my post below, I explain why.

Inside this post:

  • My Dengue fever disaster (worst I've ever felt + 3 hospital visits)
  • Emergency dental work in one of the most expensive countries in the world
  • The best BUDGET travel insurance and how you can personalize it
  • Why travel insurance isn't optional (it's survival gear)

This isn't scare tactics - it's a realistic guide for handling health emergencies while living your travel dreams.

✈️💪Where Travel & WELLNESS Converge

📍 Bali's Healing Culture --- where traditional medicine meets modern recovery 🧘‍♀️💊

Think Bali is just beaches and temples? This island has a centuries-old wellness tradition that combines Jamu herbal medicine with modern medical facilities. Perfect for travelers recovering from tropical illnesses.

The traditional healing approach emphasizes gentle movement, anti-inflammatory foods, and immune system support. Local healers recommend restorative yoga and meditation practices specifically for post-illness recovery.

👉 So what does this mean? If you're recovering from travel sickness, Bali offers both cutting-edge medical care AND holistic healing traditions.

💡 Whether you’re seeking healing from physical pain, spiritual renewal, or just a relaxing wellness experience, Bali has options for you.

Here are some options:

  • 🏥 International hospitals (BIMC, Siloam)
  • 🌿 Traditional Jamu treatments (immune boosting herbs)
  • 🧘‍♀️ Gentle yoga classes (designed for recovery)
  • 🥥 Healing food tours (anti-inflammatory Indonesian cuisine)

Travel insurance isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity. Whether you're a digital nomad, an adventurer, or a long-term traveler, having the right coverage can save you from unexpected expenses and stress.

Always on my mind: More money for more travel! It's often worth a little homework for those savings 💸
